Plains Coreopsis
Scientific Name: (Coreopsis tinctoria)
Definition: Annual, of the sunflower family (Asteraceae). This particular coreopsis grows throughout the state and is a true Native Texan. The stalk is smooth, slender, rather sprawling giving a delicate annual. May grow to 4 ft., but usually 1 - 2 ft. leafy, many branches. Ray flowers, yellow, 5- 7 petals often with red spot at base. Flower about 1 1/8" across. Prefers moist areas, ungrazed pastures; often seen as a long, showy border along roadsides. Blooms February - December.
