Wooly-White
Scientific Name: (Hymenopappus artemisiaefolius)
Definition: A member of the very large Sunflower family (Asteraceae), the Wooly-White grows upright on a stout stem to a height of 1 - 3'. The stem grows solitary and then branches in the upper part. The flowers heads are very small, about 1/2' across and fragrant. Center disc is rose to dark wine in color, and surrounded by small white petals. The head of the stem is stalked, with 30 to 60 flower heads per stem. The top of the Wooly-white forms a large, showy cluster. The plant prefers sandy soils and is often called "wild cauliflower". Plants grow singly, yet form large colonies. It makes an excellent cut flower. Blooms March-July.
