Yucca
Scientific Name: (Yucca torreyi)
Definition: "Yucca" covers a large family of
evergreen plants with many varieties. Some are short; some grow 20 - 40'.
Leaves are pointed, stiff, and narrow with cutting edges. Flowers have
6 petals, each shaped something like a bell. Color ranges from whitish
green to cream. Flowers grow in a cluster at th end of a stem which springs
up the center of the leaf cluster. Most often associated with the idea
of "Yucca" as a palnt is the Torrey yucca. Torrey yucca can
grow to 20', but more often 3 - 10'. Flower head may extend to 2 feet,
petals 2 - 3 inches long. Leaves are 2 - 5 feet long, straight, rigid
and end in a sharp point. Blooms March - May. |
